Monitor position ergonomics: how far and how high your screen should sit

Sit 20 to 28 inches from a typical monitor — roughly arm's length — and set the top edge at or just below eye level so your gaze runs about 10 to 20 degrees downward. Tilt the top back slightly. Bigger screens move farther away, not higher.

Those three numbers are most of monitor position ergonomics. Why each is what it is matters more — that's what tells you how to adapt for a 32-inch panel, an ultrawide, a laptop, or a phone.

Distance: 20 to 28 inches, measured to your eyes

That band (50–70 cm) is where most computer-workstation guidance lands; "arm's length" is the field version.

The floor is optical: focusing effort is the reciprocal of distance in meters, so at 20 inches your eyes hold about 2.0 diopters of accommodation, at 28 inches about 1.4. Eight inches of desk buys roughly a 30 percent cut in sustained focusing work, and convergence eases on the same curve. A phone at 12 inches demands about 3.3 diopters — nowhere near the ideal monitor distance.

The ceiling is legibility. Past about 30 inches people lean in to read default-size text, which cancels what they gained; raise the OS text size a step instead. Progressive-lens wearers usually need the screen lower still, since the near-vision correction sits at the bottom of the lens.

Height: why "eye level" is the wrong half of the advice

"Put the screen at eye level" gets misread as putting the center of the screen level with your eyes. That leaves you looking straight ahead or slightly up for hours, which is the wrong direction.

A downward gaze narrows the palpebral aperture — the upper lid covers more of the cornea — so less ocular surface is exposed to moving air and the tear film evaporates more slowly between blinks. A level or upward gaze opens the eye wider and dries it faster.

The drop from eye level to the screen's center equals distance × tan(angle). At 26 inches, 10 degrees is 4.6 inches down, 15 degrees is 7.0, 20 degrees is 9.5. A 24-inch 16:9 panel is about 11.8 inches tall, so its center sits 5.9 inches below the top edge — put that edge level with your eyes and the center lands near 13 degrees down, inside the band. The familiar advice isn't wrong; it's aimed at the wrong landmark.

Bigger screens go backward, not upward

A 32-inch 16:9 is about 15.7 inches tall and 27.9 wide. At 24 inches away its side edges sit roughly 30 degrees off-center and you'll turn your head to read a spreadsheet. Push it to 32 to 38 inches and the whole panel falls inside comfortable eye rotation.

Ultrawides get diagnosed wrong. A 34-inch 21:9 is only about 13.4 inches tall — barely taller than a 27-inch 16:9 — but 31 inches wide. Height was never the issue; width is. Sit 30 to 36 inches back and keep your working window in the center third.

Placement beats specs for the best monitor for eye strain: the right height and computer screen distance from eyes matter more than the panel.

A bare laptop is both too low and too close, and one hinge can't solve two problems: a stand plus an external keyboard is the only real fix.

Tilt and reflections

Tilt the top edge back 10 to 20 degrees so the screen face points at your eyes rather than your chest. That holds the whole surface at a similar focal distance and steers overhead lighting away. If you can see ceiling fixtures in the glass, keep tilting until they slide off.

Two minutes to fix your monitor position ergonomics

  1. Sit the way you actually sit: back supported, feet flat.
  2. Close your eyes five seconds, relax your neck, then open them. Where your gaze lands first is your neutral horizontal; it should fall at or just above the screen's top edge, never the center.
  3. Extend your arm. On a 24-inch panel your fingertips should just brush the glass; on anything larger they should stop short.
  4. Without moving your head, read the top-left corner, then the bottom-right. If your head turns, sit back.
  5. Read a line of body text. Leaning in means the text is too small, not that the monitor distance from eyes is too long.

Redo it after any desk, chair, or display change: an ergonomic monitor position is a property of the whole seated geometry.

What correct geometry won't fix

Placement lowers the baseline load; it doesn't change focal distance for you. Your focusing system holds near 1.5 diopters the whole time you're at the screen, and the only release is looking at something far away — the basis of the 20-20-20 rule. Blink rate is the other half: it drops during concentrated screen work and positioning doesn't restore it, as blink rate and dry eyes covers. If trouble persists, eye strain symptoms have other causes worth ruling out.

On blue light the research is genuinely mixed. Warm modes are pleasant, and cutting evening light exposure has a reasonable case for sleep timing, but the claim that screen blue light causes eye strain or retinal harm at these levels isn't well supported.

How far should a computer screen be from your eyes?

Twenty to 28 inches for a 24-inch or smaller display, measured eyes to glass. Add distance as the panel grows: 27 to 32 inches for a 27-inch, 32 to 38 for a 32-inch. If you turn your head to read a corner, you're too close.

Should the top of my monitor be at eye level?

At or just below eye level is a good proxy — on common panel sizes it puts the screen's center roughly 10 to 20 degrees below horizontal. What to avoid is the center at eye level, which forces a level or upward gaze and exposes more ocular surface to the air.

Does monitor height affect dry eyes?

Indirectly, yes. A lower screen means a downward gaze, a narrower eyelid opening, and less exposed ocular surface, so tears evaporate more slowly. The effect is real but modest — blink rate and room humidity matter at least as much.
