How to prevent eye strain through a full workday
Most eye strain at work traces to three things: a screen too close or too high, hours of unbroken near focus, and a display brighter than the room around it. Fix those first. Glare, text size, and blue-light filters matter, but far less.
That ordering is the point. Most advice on how to prevent eye strain is a flat list of ten tips, so the fixes that move the needle carry the same weight as tinted glasses. Almost no guide on how to avoid eye strain ranks them. Each fix below has a number and a thirty-second check.

Screen distance and height: the biggest single lever
Distance first: 20 to 28 inches (50–70 cm) from eye to glass for a typical 24-inch monitor, further for a 27-inch or ultrawide. Closer than 20 inches means more accommodation and convergence every hour you sit there.
Height second: the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level, so your line of sight runs 15 to 20 degrees downward to reach the middle. That isn't only about your neck — a downward gaze narrows the eye opening and slows tear evaporation, which is one reason a monitor mounted above eye level leaves eyes drier by mid-afternoon. Laptop screens usually sit too low rather than too high, so raise yours toward eye level and add an external keyboard, or use a separate monitor. Progressive wearers should watch for the head-tilted-back posture and go lower still.
30-second check: sit how you actually sit and extend your arm — fingertips should just brush the screen. Then face forward, head level: your line of sight should clear the top edge.
Break cadence: the one habit with no passive fix
Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Blink fully a few times while you look away — partial blinks are common once you're absorbed.

Size text for your actual working distance
Set text to roughly two to three times the smallest size you can barely read at your working distance, using display scaling or browser zoom rather than your neck.

Blue-light filters and night modes, honestly
Last, because the evidence is weakest. A 2023 Cochrane systematic review of blue-light filtering spectacle lenses found low-certainty evidence that they make little to no difference to eye strain from computer use, and major ophthalmology bodies don't recommend them for it. There's also no good evidence that blue light from a screen damages the eye.
Night modes are a separate question: evening screen light can shift circadian timing, an effect that tracks brightness and timing more than color. Use them if you like — they don't substitute for the fixes above.
Digital eye strain prevention when the basics aren't enough
