At rest, most adults blink about 15–20 times a minute. Put the same person in front of a monitor and the rate usually falls by half or more. Many of the remaining blinks never fully close the lid, and that's what dries the eye out.

Incomplete blinking is common during screen work, and almost nobody notices.

Why it burns, then waters, then burns again

The tear film has a break-up time: the interval before it thins and splits after a blink. If your blink interval runs longer than that, the surface sits exposed for part of every cycle. Corneal nerves report that as grit or burning.

The watering is the same problem one step later. Irritation triggers reflex tearing, which floods the eye with thin tears low in the oil that would hold them in place. They drain within seconds and the dryness returns. Watery eyes at a desk are usually a symptom of dryness, not evidence against it. What gets called computer dry eyes is more often a spreading and evaporation failure than a shortage of tears. A deliberate full blink, and when to run it

The drill: close the lids gently until they touch, pause for a beat, then open. Do that two or three times, then finish with one firmer squeeze. Ten seconds. How to check your own blink rate

Not by watching yourself. Attention to blinking raises the rate immediately, so any self-count comes out inflated. Two workarounds:

  • Have someone count for 60 seconds while you work, without telling you when they start.
  • Record a minute of yourself working on your phone's front camera, propped where you won't look at it.

On playback, watch for closure rather than movement: if the upper lashes don't reach the lower lid, log it as incomplete. The ratio of complete to partial tells you more than the total.

What blinking doesn't explain

Blue light gets blamed for screen-related dryness, and the evidence there is genuinely mixed. Major eye-care bodies have not concluded that blue light from screens damages the eye or that filtering it relieves dryness. Blink behavior and room humidity have better support.
